Board of Tax Assessors
The Cherokee Board of Tax Assessors consists of appointed members that serve six years terms. Under Georgia law the board must consist of at least three members, but no more than five. Cherokee County has five members currently. All members must be at least 21 years old and have graduated high school. Each member must also attend 40 hours of appraisal training and an additional 40 hours every two years.
Interestingly, a member is not required to have lived in Cherokee County prior to being appointed to serve on Board of Tax Assessors, they only have to establish residence here within six months of their appointment.
The Board's primary responsibility is to determine property values within the county. The Board also maintains the tax digest for Cherokee County. It has four different departments that align with the property types that are subject to taxation: Personal Property, Commercial, Residential, Rural.
Important to know:
Valuation of your property is what determines how much in taxes you pay, not just on your home, but also your business and personal property. If you believe you are paying to much in taxes each year, it could be due to your property being incorrectly valued. You have the right to challenge and appeal the valuation that the tax assessor's office assigns to your home and other property. The Board of Tax Assessors will review appeals and make decisions on the challenge.
Helpful Tip:
You have free access to the very same Appraisal Procedure Manual that the members of the Cherokee County Board of Tax Assessors and tax assessor's office use. |
Party Going Doctor Delivers Baby In His Underwear
Burning Man is known for art cars, dust storms, and fire-breathing sculptures—but this year, it also hosted something no one saw coming: a surprise baby delivery.
A Utah woman attending the festival went into labor inside her RV, despite never realizing she was pregnant. Doctors later confirmed she experienced a rare cryptic pregnancy, where the usual signs of pregnancy are so subtle they fly under the radar until—well, delivery day.
Luckily, fate (and festival chaos) had her back. An OB-GYN attendee rushed over—reportedly still in his underwear—to help bring the baby into the world. Talk about radical self-reliance!
Other odd incidents at this year’s Burn included a man meditating when a Tesla Cybertruck allegedly struck him and a possible electrocution from a puddle encounter. Still, nothing quite tops a dust-covered desert baby as the ultimate festival souvenir. |
