We all know the sting of a parking ticket or code violation that feels a bit unfair.

But in Maine, one man took defiance to the next level by paying a $20,000 fine in pennies—two million coins, roughly 12,000 pounds of copper, filling the town office with a small mountain of change.

The spectacle, sparked by a land dispute, turned into viral performance art and had town employees scrambling for backup and counting coins for hours.

Technically, pennies are legal tender, so the dramatic tactic was within his rights—even if it left the clerk questioning reality.

Imagine this happening at Canton or Woodstock City Hall: orange buckets, viral videos, and a mountain of coins at the comment table.

Next time you get a fine in Cherokee County, maybe skip the copper avalanche—but it’s good to know your options.
